You can call any space a "recording studio" these days, you could even record your next smash hit sat on a bus or the tube with your smart phone - but in my case I converted the integral garage of our present house to a decent sized room with the forethought for making music within that space, using acoustic grade plasterboard on the walls with additional rockwool installed behind. I am an Apple based musician for the simple reason that I use the Logic audio software suite to produce my tracks. I'm not particularly a gear head, nor do I buy lots of additional plug-ins. My primary objective is the song, great lyrics and pop song structure. Then it's just the matter of finding the sounds that I think fit. At this stage I'm concentrating on creating the tracks for our LIVE shows, but should we be fortunate to go further, then I'd want to work with a professional producer (notably Stephen Hague or Jason Creasey).
Since the age of seven, I have been fascinated by electronically created pop music, the wonderment of the sounds used and the process in which the music was made. This was more notable with the use of "unearthly" sounds used in Sci-Fi movies of the 60' and 70's that caught my attention - but it's not as if I know how to use a real synthesizer properly just yet... unlike this guy... a general list of equipment that I currently use for "Conversation"
Apple Macbook - Logic Pro 9 (for recording/composing) Mainstage 2 (live work)
Presonus Firestudio Mobile audio I/O - eight analog ins, stereo out, MIDI I/O - perfect for studio and live work.
Dave Smith Instuments - Prophet 08 - as yet, haven't a clue how to use it properly. A "synth-snob" moment. Might have to sell it again.
Roland D-50 - you can't be in a synth pop band and not have one! I have wanted one of these for years!
